Bad breath: real causes and serious remedies

Halitosis almost always starts in the mouth: tongue, plaque and gums. What really works and what is just marketing.

Halitosis is embarrassing, but carries good news inside: in the vast majority of cases the cause is in the mouth — so it is solved in the mouth.

The real causes

  • Tongue coating: bacteria producing sulphur compounds.
  • Plaque and gingivitis: bleeding gums bring heavy breath with them.
  • Open cavities and leaking old restorations.
  • Dry mouth: saliva is the natural detergent; medications and mouth breathing reduce it.

What works

  1. Professional hygiene (GBT) to reset the biofilm, then maintenance.
  2. Brushing twice a day + daily interdental cleaning.
  3. A gentle tongue scraper in the morning.
  4. Water often; less alcohol and tobacco.

When to investigate further

If halitosis persists after proper hygiene, we look deeper: gum pockets, hidden decay or — rarely — extra-oral causes to refer to your doctor. But the dental assessment always comes first: it is the shortest route.

Frequently asked questions

Does bad breath come from the stomach?

Rarely: in the vast majority of cases the origin is oral — tongue coating, plaque, gingivitis, decay. That's why the first step is a dental visit.

Do mouthwashes cure halitosis?

They can mask it temporarily, but without removing the biofilm the problem returns. Some aggressive rinses worsen dryness: ask us which one makes sense for you.

Does tongue cleaning help?

Yes: tongue coating is one of the main sources of malodorous compounds. A gentle tongue scraper often does more than any mint.
